DATE: September 3, 2007 Whaling Wall #53 "Orcas off the Gulf of Mexico" Wyland's Whaling Wall #53 "Orcas off the Gulf of Mexico" mural spans three walls of the convention center in South Padre Island. The purpose for painting these murals of marine mammals is to raise awareness of the dangers facing these marine creatures. Spanning 153 feet in length and 23 feet in height, it took over 111 gallons of paint, 100 volunteers, and nearly four days to complete. The mural was dedicated on March 14th, 1994.
