Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport

The closest commercial airport is the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport at Brownsville, which is about 20 miles away. Continental Airlines serves this airport. Most major car-rental companies are located here for convenient ground transportation.

Valley International Airport in Harlingen

The next closest, and most popular airport is the Valley International Airport in Harlingen located 45 miles from the island. Continental Express, SouthWest Airlines and Sun Country are the main airlines that serve this airport.

Avis, Budget, Dollar Rent a Car, Enterprise, Hertz and National Car Rentals are located at the Airport in Harlingen. Valley Transit Company provides Airport Shuttle and Charter services in a variety of equipment types including vans and 33, 52 or 57 passenger buses. Charters are provided within the local area as well as for long-distance trips.

McAllen Miller International Airport

There is also the McAllen Miller International Airport located about 90 miles away in McAllen, Texas served by Continental and American Airlines.

Private Planes

For corporate jets there is also the Mid Valley Airport located in Weslaco (about 65 miles away) and the Port Isabel-Cameron County Airport located just 15 miles away. Typical ID Requirements for Flights

Passengers 18 years of age or older are required to have one of the following:
  • 1. An official photo identification issued by a government authority.
  • OR
  • 2. Two forms of identification, one of which must be issued by a government authority.
    • Acceptable forms of ID include the following:
    • Valid Driver's License
    • Military ID
    • Valid Passport
    • Company ID card
    • Credit card
    • Social Security card
    • Proof of auto insurance in passenger's name
    • School ID card
    • Library card
Non-U.S. citizens who reside in the U.S. should carry their passport and U.S. Permanent Resident Card (or any other document which proves U.S. residency).

Children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult are not required to show ID at time of check-in.

Children ages 15-17 traveling alone need one of the following:
  • Driver's License
  • Passport
  • Credit card
  • School ID
  • Company ID
  • Library card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security card
  • Organization ID (such as athletic club, etc.)
  • Proof of auto insurance in passenger's name

Children ages 5-14 traveling alone are not required to show ID at time of check-in, however, they are encouraged to carry some form of ID during travel.
